What does it mean to be a teacher? That's kind of a loaded question. Sure, we share knowledge and enrich the minds of young people, but being a teacher is so much more than that. And being a teacher is hard. On any given day, I may answer questions, tie shoes, give hugs, explain why you should cover your mouth when you sneeze, help reach object on high shelves, settle arguments, provide food for a child who is hungry, listen to stories of emotional and physical abuse, sharpen pencils, comb hair, demonstrate how to be kind to others, and so much more.
Most people understand that teaching takes a real toll on a person. I could never find words to say how true that is. But I wouldn't want to do anything else. The most important thing that I get to do as a teacher every single day is love and care for my students. I believe that is the most important thing any of us could do for another person. Please support the educators in your life and always show them how much you care. They may be carrying a burden that you could never imagine.
